Invisalign FAQs
Read the answers to our most frequently asked questions.
- What is Invisalign?
Invisalign's series of clear aligners are custom-made to straighten your teeth without any brackets or metal wires.
Using advanced 3D computer imaging technology during the consultation process, we will create a custom treatment plan based on your unique smile and goals.
A series of custom clear aligners will then be manufactured to fit your teeth perfectly during each stage of the Invisalign treatment process.
- How does the Invisalign process work?
As your treatment progresses, your Invisalign clear aligners are designed to move your teeth in small increments. You will need to wear each aligner for about two weeks before replacing it with the next one in the series.
This process will continue until your teeth are in their correct positions as determined by your treatment plan.
- How long does Invisalign treatment take?
The duration of your Invisalign treatment will depend on your dentist's diagnosis and your specific needs.
A number of factors may determine the duration of your treatment, including: the shape of your bite, misalignment of your teeth or jaw, and the amount of movement needed to rectify the issue.
- What are Invisalign aligners made of?
Invisalign clear aligners are BPA-free and made with USP Class VI medical grade, high molecular weight polyurethane resins.
- How often do I have to visit the dentist?
You will only have to see your dentist for brief appointments every 4 to 6 weeks, since Invisalign aligners need no adjustments or tightening - you just switch to a new set of aligners every two weeks.
During these appointments, your dentist will review your progress and overall oral health, adjust your treatment as required, and answer any questions you may have. - What are the primary features of Invisalign?
The features of Invisalign include:
- Smooth construction for enhanced comfort
- A discreet, low-profile appearance
- Removable for eating, flossing, and brushing
- Do not require adjustment appointments
- How much does Invisalign cost?
The cost of your treatment will depend on the severity of your specific case, and the duration of your treatment. For example, the more severe the malocclusion, the more aligners you'll require and the more your treatment will cost.
In many cases, the cost of Invisalign is comparable to the cost of other traditional orthodontic treatments (braces).
- How will Invisalign fit my lifestyle?
You may find that Invisalign adapts to your lifestyle easily.
You may remove your clear aligners whenever you need to brush, floss, drink, or eat.
- Are there any food or drink restrictions?
There are no dietary restrictions with Invisalign - because the aligners are removable, you can take them out to eat, and continue to eat all the foods you love!
To avoid staining your clear aligners, we suggest they be removed when you consume beverages such as wine, coffee, or dark soda.
- How many sets of aligners will I need?
The severity of your misalignment or condition will determine the answer to this question.
Only your dentist is able to provide you an accurate estimate of how many aligners you'll require, based on a careful examination of your bite during your initial consultation.
- Can adults use Invisalign?
Yes. Anyone with healthy teeth and gums is a potential candidate for Invisalign.
These days, more and more adults are deciding to opt for Invisalign aligners for their orthodontic treatment.
- Can teenagers use Invisalign?
Yes! Teens may absolutely be candidates for Invisalign. In fact, Invisalign has created a line of aligners to meet teenagers' unique needs.
You'll notice compliance indicators on Invisalign Teen aligners (small blue dots that fade away after the aligners have been worn for two full weeks) to help teens stay on track with their treatment.
Eruption tabs provide space for second molars and prevent them from growing in crooked.
- How often do I have to change my Invisalign aligners?
Most patients replace their aligners with their next set every two weeks or so. Your dentist will tell you exactly how often your aligners should be switched.
- How do I clean my aligners?
Each time you remove your aligners, rinse them so any dry saliva and plaque is washed away. Without this cleaning, dental decay and bad breath may occur.
Aligners should be soaked in denture cleaner, Retainer Brite, and/or the official Invisalign cleaning crystals. Clean your aligners with anti-bacterial, clear soft soap - a fantastic an inexpensive way to keep your aligners, fresh, clear, and free of harmful bacteria.
Brush your aligners gently so they do not get scratched, then rinse off the soap. Now you are done!
Excellent oral hygiene is essential to avoiding decay and cavities, and maintaining healthy teeth. Failing to brush and floss properly can trap food debris and bacteria between your teeth and your aligners, increasing your risk of dental issues and bad breath. Brush and floss your teeth before putting your aligners back in.
- Can I play sports with Invisalign?
Since Invisalign aligners are removable, you can play sports without worrying about damaging your aligners.
Please keep in mind that you should plan your time carefully, as you must keep your Invisalign aligners in for a minimum of 22 hours a day.
We also recommend investing in a sports mouth guard to protect your teeth. Orthodontic treatment can cause your teeth to loosen slightly as they change position, and this may make them more susceptible to damage.
- Can I play my instrument with Invisalign?
Yes! You can simply remove your aligners to play your instrument, and put them back in once you are done.
- How do I store my aligners?
Your Invisalign aligners come with a case, and this is where you should put your aligners whenever you take them out to protect them.
