Preventive dental care is a shared effort between you and your dentist at Clinique Dentaire Dr Alain Quinn in Gatineau to prevent dental issues and keep your smile healthy.
Request AppointmentDental Examinations
At each dental appointment, your dentist will complete an oral exam, identify any oral health issues that have developed, and create a treatment plan for you.
During your exam, your dentist will closely inspect the health of your teeth, gums, bite, and jaw. Exams may also include any required dental x-rays, diagnostic procedures, or oral cancer screenings.
Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer can appear in any part of the mouth or surrounding tissues, and can be life-threatening if not diagnosed and treated early. During an oral cancer screening, your dentist will examine your face, neck, throat, lips, tongue, gums, and tissues for any signs of oral cancer, which can be difficult to see with the naked eye.
Professional Dental Cleaning
Before or after performing your oral exam, the dental hygienist will complete a deep cleaning of your teeth and gums to prevent and treat plaque buildup and disease.
To start, a scaler will be used to remove any tartar and plaque buildup. The dental hygienist will then use a fine toothpaste and polish to eliminate any remaining stains or plaque, before thoroughly flossing your teeth and gums.
Fluoride Treatment
If you are at high risk of tooth decay, your dentist and dental hygienist may recommend a fluoride treatment. Fluoride is a natural mineral that can help rebuild the minerals in your tooth enamel, preventing or reversing decay.
Oral Health Routines at Home
Preventing dental disease starts before you set foot in your dentist's office. Maintaining good oral hygiene habits and a balanced diet at home is essential to preserving your oral health. To keep your smile bright and healthy between dental appointments, brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time, and floss at least once a day.
